Gwen Maule is Edinburgh’s hero. She’s got a new job for a boss she actually likes, and by night as Shrike she singlehandedly keeps her city’s crime rate at an all time low. But now Rosamund Granger has escaped custody and is killing people across Scotland. Desperately trying to get ahead of the murders, Gwen discovers that Britannia are not as gone as she hoped — and their newest plan will soak the earth in blood.

Rampant Shrike Book 2 eBook Emmie Mears

If you're looking for a new urban fantasy/superhero series, I can't recommend this one highly enough -- but you should definitely start with The Masked Songbird.

Here are additional things you can look forward to in Rampant, book two in the series:

* It's less of an origin story and gets more into the day-to-day of superhero life. Gwen's superpowers continue to develop in delightful ways.

* We get to see how Gwen, Taog and Magda cope with PTSD in a way that comes across as realistic without crippling any of them to the point where they hide in cupboards (hi, Katniss).

* We don’t get to see any more of Angus, which I’m sure is a relief for everyone.

* We learn much more about Britannia, the organisation of villains (aka crazy cult) that were the baddies in the first book. They are still the baddies in this one.

* And, hoo boy, are they bad. The death toll is pretty high, you guys. And poor Gwen feels every death, which means we do too.

The only thing holding me back from giving this one five stars is that I found the end a little bit … anticlimactic? A lot of stuff happens, but Gwen is a little bit sidelined in the action, which was unsatisfying because I wanted her to lay out more smackdown than she got to. (It’s hard to be more specific than that without spoilers.)

Still, I really liked this book; I don’t know if Mears is planning on writing more books in this series, but I really hope she does!

Rampant Shrike Book 2 eBook Emmie Mears Reviews

Excellent adult version of a superhero novel. It can be a bit sad.
I had two thoughts reading the Shrike books
I want to see this in a comic
And
I would love to hear this narrated by a Welsh or Scottish voice actress like Eve Myles (Torchwood) or Michelle Gomez (Doctor Who).

I dare you not to hear their voices as you read these amazing stories, and I dare you not to thrill at Shrike's exploits and ache at Gwen's trials.

The author has captured the greatest elements of superhero stories in these awesome books, and you shouldn't miss them!
Emmie Mears delivers again. This book is fast paced and well written. Gwen is a believable and likable character. I had issues putting the book down.
It’s interesting how many superhero stories allow victims to fall to the side. Sometimes literally—I’m thinking of Sokovia rising into the air in Age of Ultron, for example. There’s no way everyone got away, right? Or even the Hulk’s smashing spree earlier in the film. Banner may be upset by his inability to control himself, but it’s only ever a development point for him. It’s hard, in the space of a film or a comic book, to stop and think about who the victims might have been, who might be missing them. Whether their deaths come at the hands of a hero or a villain matters less than the hero’s journey through the story.

And that’s the brilliance of what Emmie Mears does in RAMPANT. She uses the novel format to go beyond what a film or comic can hope to do, and she does it by letting the victims drive the story. Or at least, they drive our heroine, Gwen Maule. In a book that’s part action, part mystery, you’d think as a reader I’d be eager for another body to fall. Another plot point, another action scene. But instead, I found myself cringing along with Gwen, who’s shaken badly by every death—whether or not she knew the person.

In a world where we could really use a Gwen Maule or two, this strikes me as a deeply subversive version of a superhero story. And it’s just plain good storytelling, as it gives a different kind of a weight to the decisions she’s forced to make. Gwen knows what she’s doing. She’s capable, savvy, and compassionate. But she still has to make some hard choices.

Which isn’t to say that the story is bleak. We still get plenty of action and laugh-out-loud one-liners. No spoilers, but there’s a scene later in the book that’s pure superhero fun. In the hands of a lesser writer, it would come off as cheesy, but Emmie Mears’ writing is magic. The scene soars.

And yet through the fun, there’s also a serious treatment of trauma that rings relatable and true (one of the reasons Iron Man 3 is one of my favorite Marvel films is that it actually addresses Tony’s trauma, to a degree, after the battle for New York). The characters are given space to deal with the events of the previous book, to explore their grief, while grappling with new foes.

I came to Emmie Mears’ writing through THE MASKED SONGBIRD, and it remains one of my favorites. If possible, RAMPANT is event better.
I would like more Shrike books right now!!!!!
This was a good follow up to book 1. I hope there are more to come. Mears is a great new voice in this genre; very refreshing. Like the last one, I'd give it 4.5 if that was allowed. My main "complaints" (and they're very, very minor) are again some of the "Scottishisms" are difficult to figure out if you're not from that area. The only other issue I had was that some of the events were telegraphed far in advance. This made Shrike seem a bit clueless at times (and I don't consider her a clueless character). Regardless, I found both this book and book 1 to be very enjoyable reads.
